The Diocesan Archive preserves the documentary memory of the diocese of Girona from the ninth century to the present day. It is at the service of the bodies and institutions of the diocese to help its administrative management and at the service of researchers as a collaboration of the Church in the culture of our society.

Parish Archives (Arxius parroquials)

These archives contatin documentation of the parish archives, the sacramental books (baptisms, confirmations, marriages and deaths), established since the beginning of the 16th century, as well as the books of wills. They are of great interest for genealogical research. They can now be consulted online.

Many of the parish archives deposited in the Diocesan Archive contain documentation of other activities or realities of the parish. This documentation has been inventoried and is available for consultation by researchers who want to study a parish.

Marriage Waivers (Dispenses Matrimonials)

Exemptions of a marital nature refer to decisions not to apply an ecclesiastical law to the marriage of specific people who request it. In the Diocesan Archive there are two series of such dispensations, those of impediment and those of proclamations, which may be of interest for genealogical research because they contain family trees.

Historical Archive of the Basque Country

Euskadiko Artxibo Historikoa

Dokuklik is the web portal for consulting the documentation of an important part of the Basque historical archives, both public and private. It is also the portal for the digital copies of a significant part of these documents. It includes two search engines: Badator and Sacramental Records.

It also incorporates some archive funds located outside its borders of interest to the Country. It contains 700,000 references of documentation dated between the 13th century and 1980. Part of the documentation is digitized (4.8 million digital images).

Sacramental Records

The sacramental records database allows the consultation of the historical census (1500-1900) and of the inhabitants of the three territories of the Autonomous Community, which is included in the sacramental books of the Catholic Church. It contains 5.6 million records relating to baptized, married and deceased.

Diocesan Historical Archive of San Sebastian (Basque Country)

Donostiako Elizbarrutiko Artxibo Historikoa (Euskal Herria)

Although the birth of the Diocese dates from 1950, this archive did not officially begin until 1972, when the then Bishop of the Diocese, Mr. Jacinto Argaya, appointed Sebastián Insausti as the first Diocesan Archivist with the precise objective to collect those documents that have to reveal to us how those who in previous times exercised pastoral care within our province solved their pastoral problems.

At present, the archive has the main tasks of preserving and disseminating the historical documentary collections – those older than 75 years – of the Diocese of San Sebastián, that is, of all of Gipuzkoa. It is a set of old and very valuable documents – the oldest of those dating from 1353 – that constitute an irreplaceable portion of the memory of the historical territory of Gipuzkoa and allow us to recall the evolution of its society, its people, its faith and their customs.
