Obituaries

(noun) a notice of a death, especially in a newspaper, typically including a brief biography of the deceased person.

About Obituaries

Funeral announcements (Esquelas) were published in the newspaper by the deceased individual’s family or friends. They often yield a great deal of information. This information can include the spouse, children, parents, siblings, in-laws, nephews, nieces, etc. A few were also published to announce the anniversary of a loved one’s death and/or upcoming religious service (such as a mass.) Necrologías are the equivalent of an obituary.
The newspaper also published the births, marriages, and deaths of Registro Civil (Civil Registry.) The births did not contain names, but the marriages and deaths included more information.
The esquelas, necrologías, and registro civil entries provided here were obtained from Cuban newspapers.
This has been an ongoing project for Mariela Fernandez and Martha Ibañez Zervoudakis since almost the inception of the club. These were gathered by them from the microfilms of the newspapers.
