FR. JUAN LUIS SÁNCHEZ Y HERNÁNDEZ GAMBOA

Rev. Juan Luis Sánchez was born in Havana. He completed primary studies in Escuelas Pías de La Habana and left Cuba in 1962 as part of “Operation Pedro Pan.” He graduated from the University of Miami with a BA in Physics and Mathematics and worked as a teacher and social worker in this city. He entered the Saint Vincent de Paul Seminary in Boynton Beach and was ordained a priest in 1984. Father has a Master of Divinity from the Saint Vincent de Paúl Seminary and obtained a degree in Dogmatic Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Since 1994 he has worked in several parishes in Miami and is currently Associate Pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Parish in Little Havana. An excellent and entertaining lecturer, Father Sánchez has extensively cultivated the study of Cuban genealogy having offered lectures, published articles on the subject, and played an integral role in the publication of Volumes VII, VIII, IX of Historia de Familias Cubanas by Francisco Xavier de Santa Cruz y Mallén, Conde de Jaruco and Santa Cruz de Mopox.

The papers he has generously shared with us are part of his genealogical collection and is the research he commissioned to Dr. María Teresa Cornide, retired Professor of Genetics at the University of Havana and well-known historian and genealogist. Dr. Cornide has published an excellent book in Spanish, “De La Havana, de siglos y familias”, and has collaborated with the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana.

Our warmest thanks to Fr. Sánchez for donating his genealogical collection to the CGC.

Father Sánchez was also kind enough to write several articles and family studies for our journal, Raíces de la Perla.
