Our long-standing member, Adalberto Fernandez, has authored and shared with us this study of indigenous DNA in his family research.
“I have always been intrigued, but but never surprised by the persistence of indigenous DNA found on present-day living individuals of Cuban descent. Knowing that I descend from two of Vasco Porcallo’s daughters, I was bemused when all the various autosomal reports from the various services dote me with a 4 to 5% indigenous American component. What came as a sweet reward for me was, when 23AndMe informed me that my maternal haplogroup is A-2, confirming old family stories about my matri-maternal great-grandmother being of “Indian” descent.”
