The Cuban Hurricane of 1844 was the fifth storm of that year’s Atlantic hurricane season. Striking just before midnight on October 4, it tore across nearly 300 miles of western Cuba. The storm claimed 500 lives, injured thousands, and left widespread devastation in its wake.
